The Lizard Peninsula is one of the most delightful and interesting parts of Cornwall.Surrounded by the sea it has a sense of wildness and solitude that is rare in these times.A string of fishing villages and coves are connected by imposing cliffs and seascapes and it is possible to walk for miles along coastal paths amidst breathtaking scenery or spend the day sunbathing and swimming on one of the many beaches.Helston can be regarded as the Capital of the Lizard which is a busy town of stone houses and terraces.As a commercial centre for a large area, Helston has a full range of shops and services.Surrounding the Lizard are such picturesque villages such as Coverack, Porthleven, Cadgwith and Helford each with its own unique character and history.In everyone of these villages the culture is linked to the sea and you are never far away from its history and influence.Many houses (including The Paris Hotel) are named after shipwrecks in times past, fishing boats and their gear are in every harbour.Although the Lizard is isolated recent times have not passed it by, The Satellite Station on Goonhilly Downs was the largest in the world handling millions of international phone calls, emails and tv broadcasts and now hosts a large visitors centre.The Air Base at Culdrose is the centre for air sea rescue for a huge area with its search and rescue helicopters assisting in rescues as far away as Ireland.Many other places of interest are to be found in the area amongst which are the Seal Sanctuary at Gweek and beautiful gardens at Trebah, Glendurgan and Trevarno.Roskilly's is also a place to visit nearby, a small working Cornish Organic Farm producing tasty ice creams, fudge and yoghurt made with their own Jersey milk that comes from their own 125 strong herd.You can visit the milking gallery and watch the cows being milked (a fabulous experience for the kids) and also visit the ice cream parlour to watch it being made.Cornish Camels is free to visit where you can walk the farm trail and see many of the animals.In peak season there is an organic cafe, farm shop and gift shop.There are also picnic tables and a play area for the children which makes a great day out.Coverack has a busy social diary with a regatta, Lifeboat Day events by the local choirs and dramatic society and many other events to entertain during the year.
